The Pool Industry goes Energy-Efficient with Variable Speed Pool Pumps

Incredible Swimming Pool Pump

Variable Speed Pool Pumps – The Future of Swimming Pools

By choosing the proper pump, Swimming pool owners can expect savings of at least $400/year.

The high energy consumption of their pool and spa is something that very few pool owners truly realize.  In fact, the pool motor is actually one of the most energy demanding appliances they have on their property.  It’s because standard swimming pool pumps are made with a single stage motor, that is very in-efficient.  With electricity supply in abundance, and energy conservation a low priority – this has been the industry standard for years.

So how much energy is my swimming pool pump using? A study recently showed that to run California’s 1.2 million pools requires about the same output as one nuclear power or two conventional energy plants (study by Davis Energy Group for Pacific Gas & Electric – 2004).  Imagine the energy usage of ALL the swimming pools across the United States, and how this much impact our energy conservation efforts.  Arizona too has an incredible abundance of swimming pools per home, which is why Phoenix pool contractors are switching to these incredible new pumps.

The solution? Pumps working smarter, not harder.

In the recent years, there have been some dramatic improvements in the pool industry – regarding swimming pool pumps and swimming pool motors.  The newest in power savings has come from the introduction of the revolutionary variable drive, variable speed pool and spa pump.  By using permanent magnetic motors, these new pool pumps have been designed to use less power.  Permanent magnet motors (like those used in hybrid cars) provide a typical 30% base savings compared to induction motors. As the pool and spa operator programs this pump to work at the minimum required capacity for each pool task (heating, cleaning, filtration, waterfalls, etc.) energy reduction can be as much as 90%!

By using a pool and spa pump at its lowest speed necessary to fulfill a job, it will dramatically reduce the energy consumed (simply because it takes less power to move water slowly than quickly).  Did you know?  By reducing pump speed by half reduces power needed to an eighth of what was needed previously to get the job done.  Simply put, these new pumps allow the pool owner to program and “dial in” the pump speed to achieve the minimum electricity use.

Energy Savings of $620 to $1,350

According to Pentair Pool Products, their IntelliFlo® and IntelliPro™ variable drive pumps routinely reduce energy use up to ninety %, depending on the models and circumstances for average savings of $620 to $1,350 annually.  Many swimming pool owners are having their out-dated pumps replaced because the huge cost savings will actually pay for the new variable speed swimming pool pump.

Energy delivery charges are even higher in Arizona, and with Phoenix’s huge swimming pool count, this new swimming pool pump has become an absolute necessity for pool companies in Arizona when building swimming pools.  California’s revolution to eco-friendly products makes owning an power efficient pump even more necessary.

Specific Examples of how IntelliFlo Pentair pumps can be designed in your pool & spa:

This pump can be used for an in-floor cleaner system booster pump, and it’s set at 3050 RPM, which is approximately a 2 horsepower swimming pool pump.  The same pump can be throttled down to a 1/2 horsepower pool pump to circulate & filter the water of the swimming pool.  With some simple computer technology, the same swimming pool pump can be used as a booster pump for the hot tub jets (imagine a slow speed jet and a faster one – all from the same pool pump, and a press of a button!)  Another common use is the setting to control the flow of a fountain or pool water feature (it is also known to be used by high end residential Phoenix landscaping companies to control the sound & flow of custom landscape waterfalls & ponds).  The IntelliFlo Pentair pump can be set for variable speeds -  giving the pool owner a low speed fountain for a relaxing evening outdoors, or you can turn the speed faster for MAX PRESSURE for a backyard party!
